machu picchu

The sun rising on Machu Picchu - the Lost City of the Incas.
Machu Picchu was 'discovered' by North American explorer Hiram Bingham
in 1911 in an overgrown state. It is hidden by the high surrounding mountains,
and because of that it is one of the few Inca sites the Spanish did not destroy.
The Incas had no written language, so archeologists and historians can only
hypothesize as to what Machu Picchu, in all its beauty, meant to the Incas.

porteros

inca stonework

Hard working, underpaid porters unload
supplies for tourist treks up the mountain.
The burros only go so far - food and tents
must be hand carried the rest of the way.

An example of Inca stonework.
Without metal tools..how did they do it?
Parabolic gold mirrors reflecting sunlight
to cut like a laser? Only the Inca knows.

alpaca

Oh, those kissable lips!
This alpaca is not just any alpaca.
This picture was taken days before
inauguration ceremonies for Peruvian
President Toledo, held on Machu Picchu
for the first time in modern history.
And while national TV was broadcasting
the event, our well groomed alpaca
strolled to and fro in the background.
