In 1941, German physicist  Werner Heisenberg travelled to Copenhagen to meet his Danish
colleague Niels Bohr. These old friends had revolutionized atomic physics with their work
on quantum mechanics in the 1920's, but now were on opposite sides in a world war.
Pondering why Heisenberg went to Copenhagen has occupied historians ever since.

'The Copenhagen Interpretation'
symposium, co-sponsored by the
US Department of Energy, the
National Science Foundation and
the Smithsonian Institution, was
held to explore the science and
history of Michael Frayn's play
'Copenhagen', in which Heisenberg
& Bohr deal with knowledge,
motivation and ethics. The
symposium also offered a glimpse
of issues involved in presenting
science and history as drama.
